How to Jump-Start a Dead Car Battery Safely
Imagine preparing for a long-awaited road trip — everything’s packed, routes planned, and the car ready to go. But as soon as you turn the key, you hear the dreaded “click”. A dead battery! Don’t panic — with a few simple steps, you can safely jump-start your car and get back on the road in no time.
What You’ll Need
- Jumper Cables: Keep a quality pair (10–20 feet long) in your car at all times. Ensure they’re free from rust or fraying.
- A Second Vehicle: You’ll need another car with a working 12V battery.
- Paper Towel or Rag: Clean any corrosion from battery terminals before connecting cables.
Steps to Jump-Start Your Car Battery
- Park both vehicles close, but not touching — around 2 feet apart.
- Turn off both engines and engage parking brakes.
- Connect the red (+) jumper cable to the dead battery’s positive terminal.
- Attach the other end of the red cable to the positive terminal of the working battery.
- Connect the black (–) cable to the good battery’s negative terminal.
- Attach the remaining black cable to an unpainted metal surface on your car (not the battery).
- Start the working car and let it run for 2–3 minutes.
- Start your car. If it starts, leave it running for a few minutes before disconnecting.
- Remove the cables in reverse order: black (dead), black (good), red (good), red (dead).
After the Jump
Once your car starts, drive for at least 20–30 minutes to recharge the battery. If your car struggles to start again later, the battery may need replacement.
